Simplifying Load Management for Amateur Athletes

The whole idea in one sentence

Simplifying load management starts with one principle: the body adapts to work it has done before, and struggles with work it hasn't. Everything else — the spreadsheets, the GPS units, the ratios — is just a way of tracking how far ahead of your recent history you're asking your body to go.

That applies to more than fitness. It applies to the tissue capacity of a hamstring at 90% of top speed, to how many times a shoulder can absorb contact, to how well you hold shape in a tackle when you're tired. A player who has run twice in eight weeks isn't only unfit. Their technique falls apart earlier, and technique falling apart is where a lot of non-contact injuries begin.

Load management has taken a beating in the media, mostly because people hear it and think "resting stars." In a community sport setting it means close to the opposite. It's about getting the most available training and playing minutes out of an athlete with the least amount of guesswork.

Measure load with session RPE

You don't need a GPS vest. Multiply how hard a session felt, on a scale of 1 to 10, by its duration in minutes. That gives you arbitrary units.

A 60-minute field session that felt 8/10 is 480. A 45-minute easy run at 4/10 is 180. A 90-minute game at 9/10 is 810. Add the week up and you have a single number that captures both volume and intensity.

Rate the session about 20 to 30 minutes afterwards, not during. Rate the whole session, not the hardest part. Do it for four weeks and you'll have something far more useful than memory, which reliably tells you that last week was "pretty light" when it was 2,400 units.

Spikes matter more than totals

A 3,000-unit week is unremarkable if the previous month averaged 2,800. The same week is a large jump if you've been sitting on 1,200.

The acute:chronic workload ratio, popularised by sports scientist Tim Gabbett, compares this week's load against a rolling four-week average. Gabbett's work suggested that sitting roughly between 0.8 and 1.3 was associated with fewer injuries than large spikes above that. The method has since been criticised on statistical grounds, and it isn't a rule you should treat as gospel. As a rough check on whether you're about to double your training week, it still does the job.

The practical version: look at your last four weeks, average them, and don't let the coming week land dramatically above that average. Where you do need to jump — preseason trials, a tournament, a carnival weekend — plan a lighter week either side.

The classic community-sport spike is the return from a layoff. Eight weeks off over the offseason or after injury, then three field sessions and a trial game in the first fortnight. Calves, hamstrings, groins and Achilles tendons tend to be the first to complain, and ankle sprains, knee injuries and head knocks all sit in the same window because fatigue and rusty movement skills travel together.

Load isn't only running

Two athletes can log identical weekly units and be doing completely different work. Track the specific exposures your sport demands:

  • High-speed running. Metres above roughly 85% of your maximum speed. Hamstrings need repeated exposure to this, and jogging laps doesn't provide it.

  • Change of direction. Cutting, decelerating, reacting to a person rather than a cone. Plenty of non-contact injuries happen while reacting to an external cue, not during planned movement.

  • Contact. Tackling, wrestling, collisions. Body positioning under fatigue is a trainable skill that decays quickly with time off.

  • Jumping and landing. Volume of takeoffs and landings, particularly single-leg.

Work, sleep, exam periods and a newborn all sit on the same ledger. A 2,500-unit week on six hours of sleep is not the same week as 2,500 units on eight.

What a load-focused physiotherapy assessment involves

When an athlete comes to us at Five Dock or Gladesville with a load question, most of the first appointment is history. Weekly training minutes, sessions per week, the last four weeks in detail, previous injuries, time missed, what the coach has planned for the next month, and what position or event they're preparing for.

Physical testing depends on the sport and the body part, and usually includes some combination of:

  • Ankle and hip range of motion, including weight-bearing ankle dorsiflexion measured in centimetres so it can be re-tested

  • Strength testing — calf raise repetitions to failure on each leg, hamstring strength through a Nordic or isometric hold, hip adductor and abductor squeeze values

  • Single-leg hop and hop-for-distance testing, comparing sides; clinicians commonly look for limb symmetry around 90% or better as one input among several

  • Watching you move — running mechanics, deceleration, a cut, a jump and landing

None of these tests predicts injury on its own, and we don't present them that way. They give a baseline, show side-to-side gaps worth addressing, and make it easier to judge whether a proposed jump in training is reasonable for the athlete in front of us.

Building the ramp

A sensible return to sport after a break usually runs over weeks rather than days: rebuild aerobic base and strength first, add high-speed running exposure gradually and early rather than saving it for the week before trials, then layer in change of direction, then contact or competition intensity.

How long that takes depends on the layoff, the injury history, the sport and the individual. A three-week holiday and a 12-month ACL reconstruction sit at opposite ends of that range, and anyone quoting you a fixed number of weeks without assessing you is guessing.

When to get it looked at

Book an assessment if pain increases through a session rather than warming up and settling, if soreness is still there 48 hours later, if you're limping or altering technique to get through, if a joint swells, or if something has recurred more than once in a season. Also worth a look if you're coming back from a long break and you'd rather plan the ramp than improvise it.

Tracking four numbers a week — sessions, minutes, RPE and total units — costs about a minute and gives you and your physiotherapist something real to work from.
