Chiropractor in Five Dock: A Guide for Athletes

Why people book a chiropractor in Five Dock
Most people who book a chiropractor in Five Dock arrive with something that has been niggling for a few weeks and has started to change how they train. Lower back stiffness that bites on the third rep of a deadlift. A neck that will not rotate far enough to check the blind spot, let alone spot a runner on the wing. Mid-back tightness that shows up as soon as a barbell goes overhead. Sometimes it is a genuine acute episode after a heavy session or an awkward tackle at a Canada Bay club game.
Chiropractic at SportsFit is built around the same population the rest of the clinic works with: people who play sport, train regularly, or want to get back to doing both. That shapes what happens in the room. Time goes into working out why the area is irritated and what has to change in your week, not just what feels tight today.
What the assessment covers
The first appointment starts with history, and it is more detailed than most people expect. Training load over the past six to eight weeks, what changed before symptoms started, how the pain behaves through the day, what makes it worse and what settles it, previous injuries on the same side, sleep, and any prior imaging or diagnoses.
From there the physical assessment looks at how you actually move. Spinal range through the neck, thoracic spine and lumbar spine. Hip rotation and extension, because a stiff hip often shows up as a busy lower back. Shoulder blade movement if the complaint is upper back or neck. Strength testing where it matters. Neurological screening if you report pins and needles, numbness or weakness down an arm or leg.
We also use objective testing rather than relying only on how a joint feels under the hand. The VALD ForceFrame measures hip and shoulder strength side to side, and AxIT force plates pick up asymmetry in how you load through each leg in a squat or a hop. Numbers give you a starting point to compare against later, which is far more useful than a general impression that things are "looser".
What a session involves
A typical treatment session combines hands-on work with something you take away and do. Hands-on may include spinal and peripheral joint manipulation or mobilisation, soft tissue work through the surrounding muscles, and specific stretching. Adjustments are one tool among several, and they are explained before they happen, including what you will feel and what the alternatives are if you would rather not have a high-velocity technique.
What happens after the table matters just as much. That might be a short set of loading exercises for the area, a change to how you set up a lift, or a plan for how to modify training for the next fortnight without stopping altogether. If shockwave therapy or a graded loading program is more appropriate for a tendon-related complaint, that gets flagged early rather than after six sessions of the same thing.
Sessions are one-to-one. We do not double-book, so nobody is left on a table in a side room while the practitioner works with someone else.
How chiropractic fits with the rest of the clinic
Plenty of people at the Five Dock clinic see a chiropractor and a physiotherapist for related reasons, or move between the two as a problem changes. A rower with acute low back pain may want hands-on treatment and load modification early, then shift into strength work in the gym space once symptoms settle. A cyclist with recurring neck pain may need bike setup addressed alongside thoracic mobility.
Because chiropractic, physiotherapy, exercise physiology and strength and conditioning all run out of the same building, handovers are direct. Your practitioners can see the same testing data and agree on what stage you are at rather than working from separate notes.
When to get looked at sooner
Book earlier rather than later if back or neck pain came on after a fall or collision, if you have pain that wakes you consistently at night, if you notice numbness, weakness or pins and needles in an arm or leg, or if a complaint has not shifted at all in two to three weeks despite backing off training. Changes to bladder or bowel function, unexplained weight loss, or fever alongside spinal pain warrant urgent medical review, not a chiropractic appointment.
Funding and referrals
Chiropractic at SportsFit can be paid privately, with health fund rebates available on the spot for most funds. We also work with CTP claims after motor vehicle accidents, workers compensation, NDIS participants, and EPC referrals from a GP under a chronic disease management plan. If you are unsure which applies, bring your referral or claim number and we will check what is covered before treatment starts.
If something has been limiting how you train for more than a couple of weeks, come in and get it assessed properly.
