Never been to a physiotherapist before? Here’s what to expect!
How can physios help? As a physiotherapist we see a array of conditions, injuries and pain
constraints. This could be anywhere from a muscle strain, lower back pain, stiff neck and headaches to ACL rehabilitation, sprained ankles and muscle tears.
Our first priority is to listen to what you have to say and what you want to achieve. We then carry out a variety of relevant assessments and measures to identify the contributing factors to why you may be in pain or lacking performance. Note that the area of pain is not always to blame! These assessments will include hands on testing, range of motion, strength, running/movement mechanics and patterns and potentially other appropriate tests in the relevant circumstance.
A treatment plan will then be detailed and developed between our therapist and yourself to allow an understanding of what needs to be done and what steps need to be taken to reach our goal. Hands on treatment and manual therapy will usually follow to assist with pain relief and rehabilitation exercises prescribed afterwards to target the specific impairments.
Follow up appointments are usually required to complete the full rehabilitation process as our jobs as physiotherapists are not only to help you out of pain, but also to help you return to performance and reduce the risk of re-injury. Getting out of pain is one thing, but movement optimization and strength is another.
